The practice is deeply rooted in monotheistic traditions—from Catholicism to Judaism and Islam—based on the belief that demonic entities or evil spirits can seize control of a human body, obscure the mind, and inflict physical and spiritual suffering. Over the centuries, the Catholic Church refined the protocols of the rite, with the *Rituale Romanum* of 1614 serving as the foundational manual for the practice. Authorized exorcists undergo rigorous training that combines theological studies with a baseline knowledge of psychiatry, aimed at distinguishing clinical mental distress from what they define as "demonic possession." Today, before a formal exorcism is sanctioned, the Church typically requires an extensive series of medical and professional evaluations, acknowledging that many mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or epilepsy, were historically misidentified as the intrusion of dark forces. Jewish tradition similarly features the concept of the "Dybbuk"—the wandering soul of a sinner that enters the body of a living person and refuses to leave. Dybbuk expulsion rituals, performed according to the Kabbalah, include the sounding of the Shofar, the chanting of Psalms, and supplications by Kabbalistic rabbis. Conversely, in the realms of science and psychology, phenomena of possession are explained as dissociative disorders or forms of collective hysteria. Despite technological and medical progress, the demand for exorcists in the modern world is steadily increasing, raising fascinating questions about the nature of faith, the fear of the unknown, and the eternal struggle between light and shadow within the human consciousness.
