600 Missiles Below Zero: The Lost Nuclear Base
A routine flight revealed a secret base under Greenland's ice. 'Project Iceworm' planned to hide hundreds of nuclear missiles, and now it's an ecological ticking time bomb.
You won't believe this story! It's one of the craziest things I've ever heard! Think about it: a routine flight by a NASA research plane flies over Greenland, the coldest and most desolate place on Earth, and suddenly their radars pick up something. Not just something, an entire city! Buildings, tunnels, a whole network of man-made structures, buried deep beneath layers of ice. It sounds like the beginning of a sci-fi movie, but it's completely real! This discovery uncovered one of the biggest and best-kept secrets of the Cold War, a project so ambitious and dangerous that it's simply inconceivable. I'm still in complete shock from this story!
It all started in the late 1950s, at the height of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. Officially, the US Army announced the establishment of "Camp Century," an advanced scientific base for studying Greenland's glaciers. Sounds completely innocent, right? Scientists studying the environment, collecting data, advancing human knowledge. They even produced films showing life in this underground base, which was powered by a mobile nuclear reactor. But all of it was one big show, a sophisticated cover story for something much bigger, and much scarier.
The project's real name was "Project Iceworm"! The name alone gives you chills! And its goal was simply insane. The Americans wanted to exploit Greenland's strategic location, relatively close to the Soviet Union, to build a massive network of tunnels thousands of kilometers long under the ice. And why did they need these tunnels? To hide and store no less than 600 nuclear missiles! Yes, six hundred! The idea was that these missiles would be mobile within the tunnels, so the Soviets would never know their exact location and they could be launched at any given moment. It was meant to be the ultimate secret weapon. Do you grasp the magnitude of this madness?
"City Under the Ice" wasn't just a nickname, it was a real city in every sense of the word! Between 100 to 200 soldiers and engineers lived and worked there at any given time. They had everything! A small nuclear reactor supplied electricity to the entire city, there was a laboratory, a small hospital, a cinema, and even a church! All hundreds of meters beneath the eternal ice sheet. Life there must have been a surreal experience. To live all day under the frozen ground, knowing you're part of one of the world's most secret and dangerous projects, and that you're sitting on a nuclear arsenal that could start World War III. I wonder if there are other strange structures like this in the world; you can find many similar stories in our Mysteries category.
So why was this crazy project stopped? Why was this city abandoned? The answer is nature itself. The scientists who designed the project made one critical mistake. They assumed that Greenland's ice sheet was a stable and fixed mass that didn't move. They were wrong, and by a lot. They soon discovered that glaciers are not static at all; they are "alive" and constantly moving. The movement of the glaciers exerted immense pressure on the tunnels and structures, and simply began to crush them. Engineers realized that the entire base was in danger of complete collapse. The dream of a nuclear city under the ice was about to turn into a massive ice tomb.
In 1967, less than ten years after it began, the project was canceled and the base was abandoned in haste. The army took the nuclear reactor with them, but left everything else behind! All the structures, the equipment, entire tanks of fuel, immense quantities of sewage and human waste, and worst of all, radioactive coolant from the reactor. The assumption was that the snow and ice falling there constantly would simply bury the base deeper and deeper, and that it would remain buried forever in its ice tomb. They simply closed the door and left, thinking their secret and their mess would remain frozen forever. You can find more amazing stories like this on our Articles page.
And here the story takes a turn straight out of an ecological horror movie! The assumption that the base would remain frozen forever was true for the world of the 1960s, but not for our world. Climate change and global warming are causing Greenland's glaciers to melt at a dizzying rate. The very ice that was supposed to be the eternal safe for "Camp Century" is starting to leak. Scientists who studied the area discovered that the dangerous waste left there is not being buried deeper, but quite the opposite! It's approaching the surface!
This is a ticking time bomb! According to forecasts, within a few decades, all the toxic and radioactive materials left there could start leaking out into the environment and reach the ocean. This could cause an ecological disaster of unimaginable proportions. A frozen ghost of the Cold War threatens to return and haunt us in the worst possible way. It's simply incredible how a decision made over fifty years ago can blow up in our faces today. If this story amazed you, wait until you see our other Videos.
This story is simply an amazing lesson in humility. It shows how human ambition and the secrets of the Cold War created a monster that is coming back to life because of our current mistakes. And of course, it makes you wonder, how many more such secrets are buried around the world? How many more abandoned bases and secret operations are underground, in the depths of the sea, or under the ice, waiting to be discovered? I truly think reality surpasses all imagination! No screenwriter could have invented something like this!
