The public and media discussion surrounding Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, or UAPs as they are officially known, has undergone a significant change in recent years. What was once the domain of conspiracy theorists and fringe culture has become a topic seriously addressed in the corridors of government and security in the United States. This shift has led to direct and documented confrontations between journalists and researchers and senior members of the intelligence community, who are for the first time facing direct and sharp questions on a subject that has been downplayed for decades. These figures are now required to provide answers, or at least explain why they cannot provide them.

It all actually began to unfold officially in late 2017, with the revelation of a secret Pentagon program to research UFOs, AATIP, and the publication of videos filmed by US Navy fighter pilots. The videos, known as "Gimbal," "Go Fast," and "Tic Tac," showed objects moving in ways that seemed to defy known laws of physics. These publications, which appeared in major media outlets such as The New York Times, put an end to sweeping denials. The government could no longer ignore the phenomenon or dismiss it as misidentification or natural phenomena. This forced the Pentagon to acknowledge the existence of the phenomenon and to begin a process of formal and institutionalized collection of information and reports on it.

As a result of public and political pressure, the Pentagon established a new and upgraded research body called AARO, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office. It was headed by Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, a physicist and veteran intelligence officer. The office's goal was to centralize all UAP reports from all military branches and federal agencies, analyze them, and try to find conventional explanations for them. However, the work of the office, and the few public reports it published, met with much criticism. Critics claim that the office focuses on attempts to disprove the reports instead of investigating them in depth, and that it serves as a front designed to calm the public while the truly essential information remains classified. Some of this criticism stems from the volume of classified documents that are clearly known to exist.

The confrontation culminated in hearings held in the US Congress. The most prominent was the public hearing in July 2023, where David Grusch, a former senior intelligence officer and Air Force veteran, testified under oath. Grusch claimed that the US government has a secret and illegal program for reverse-engineering non-human origin aircraft, a program from Congress and the public. Grusch's testimony, along with testimonies from combat pilots, sent shockwaves through the political and media system. It turned theoretical questions into real and urgent ones, and put the heads of intelligence agencies on the defensive against accusations of a widespread government cover-up. This reminds us of the story of the Lost UFO photo revealed: The truth behind the Kelvin photo.
