The Captain: The Yasur Helicopter – From Green Giant to Tragic Hero

The CH-53 Stallion, known in Israel by its legendary name "Yasur," is far more than just another aircraft in the Air Force’s fleet; it has served as the operational and logistical backbone of the IDF for over five decades. The painful history of the Yasur includes the "Disaster of the 54" in the Jordan Valley, the 2010 crash in Romania during a training exercise, and, of course, the event etched deepest into the collective memory: the 1997 Helicopter Disaster, where two Yasurs collided over She'ar Yashuv, killing 73 servicemen. Despite its advancing age and the technical malfunctions that shadowed its later years, the Air Force continued to rely on it for the vast majority of its heavy-lift missions. Extensive upgrades, such as the "Yasur 2000" project, transformed it into a more sophisticated and modern machine, sustaining it until its planned replacement by the cutting-edge CH-53K.
